Quakers wasted no time racing in the first week of the New Year, with several out on the first day of 2019 alone.

The opening day of the year saw the first of the regular Hardmoors events, the 30 mile event, which took in a circular route from Robin Hood’s Bay along part of the Cleveland Way. David Thompson finished in 6:05:12 followed by Jamie Norman (6:39:30), Wendy Colling (6:44:11), Sandra Cass (6:44:15) and Rebecca Dodd (7:03:50).

Also running off-road were the trio who ran at the Captain Cook’s fell race, a 5 mile route which took in the climb up to the monument and back down. Lucia Minto completed the distance in 45:18 along with Simon Rek (46:07) and Malcolm Hewitson (49:19).

Up at Morpeth, Diane Vaughan and Richard Hughes ran in the 11K road race taking place there, the former finishing in 50:29 (and second in her age category), the latter in 57:53.

Down in Kent, Rebecca Howard took part in the Lamberhurst 10K, completing the distance in 45:31.

The first weekend of the year had seen the Stuart Pailor Memorial Old Monks trail race held at Hart, near Hartlepool. Over the 5.5 multi-terrain route, Katherine Hackett finished in 41:34 (and second in her age category), followed by Stuart Hardcastle (45:40), Anthony Corbett (49:15), Ian Hart (50:34), April Corbett (50:36), Sandra Cass (50:47), Polly Lerner (55:43) and Hannah Alderson (55:43).

At the Commondale Clart fell race, covering a 6 mile route which took in 1000 feet of climb, Simon Rek completed the distance in 52:30 along with Malcolm Hewitson in 56:59.

Susan Rigg was the sole Quaker at the North Lakes New Year half marathon at Cockermouth, completing the undulating route in 2:42:38

The late start at Darlington meant several headed to Sedgefield where the regular start allowed the chance to double up on the day. At Sedgefield, Phil Rutter finished in 23:01 along with Dave Thompson (23:41), Anthony Corbett (27:16), April Corbett (27:16), Sandra Cass (27:19), Gill Colling (27:27), Richard Payne (28:32) and Gill Wallis (55:33), while at Hackworth, Andrew Dixon finished there in 23:06 along with Lisa Jenkins (29:30) and Kim Hall (48:36). At Tees Barrage, Helen Clark finished in 27:04 along with Emily Beaumont (27:05) and Rebecca Dodd (30:59), David Ledgerwood did the Riverside run in 25:58, and Leigh Hindle and Sharon Carr ran at Albert Park in 36:40 and 37:48 respectively. Further afield, Dawn Richardson did the Clumber Park run near Worksop in 20:28, Rebecca Howard finished the Bedgebury Pinetum run in Kent in 35:30, while north of the border, Lucia Minto did the Strathclyde run in 30:42, and Julie Whinn did the Livingston run in 27:38.
