Running since he was 10 years old Danny Orton kicks off 2019 with the January Member spotlight.
1. How did you get into running and why?
I got into running when I was 10 years old. It was a choice between running or football and I wasn’t very good at football so I chose to take up running, plus I had far too much energy for my mum’s liking and I was driving her crazy around the house so she encouraged me to take up a sport and running seemed liked the ideal fit. During my teens I represented both County Durham and Cleveland in Cross Country and I was close to representing England when I was 18 but unfortunately once I got a full time job my training and my commitment paid the price.
2. What kept you going when you first started running?
I think it was definitely the support of the coaches and the encouragement they gave me at training sessions. Also the new people I was meeting at the sessions made me want to continue running.
3. How much training do you typically do?
Tell us about some of the races that you’ve done in the past?I try to train as and when I can but I like to try and train at least twice a week. Unfortunately at the moment I can’t get to the sessions as much as I would like due to work commitments, family and recovering from a groin injury.
4. Be honest, do you enjoy training?
Yes I do enjoy it. Don’t get me wrong some of the sessions at Quakers are tough but I like it that way as it will definitely improve you but also training relaxes my mind and helps me to take my mind off things.
5. Do you do any other sports or fitness activities?
I like to ride my bike whenever I get the opportunity as it is definitely good for my fitness. I am also a member of Snap Fitness and try to get to the gym if I have any spare time.
6. Do you manage to fit in any other hobbies?
I like to socialise with friends over a few beers whilst watching the football. I also enjoy going to the cinema and having days out with my family.
7. Tell us about some of the races that you’ve done in the past
Some of the races I have done in the past have been the GNR, Darlington 10k, Guy Fawkes 10 and Thirsk 10.
8. What’s your current running goal?
Hopefully I will one day be able to run a sub 19, 5k and a sub 40, 10k.
9. What are your longer term running goals?
I would love to be able to complete a marathon one day.
10. What is your favourite race/distance/terrain?
My favourite race has to be the Great North Run for the support around the course and my favourite distance is 10 miles or a half marathon and the terrain is always road for me.
11. What are your proudest running achievements?
I would say it would have to be representing my county at the cross country championships in Cheltenham back in 1998; it was a fantastic experience. Also completing my first Great North Run made me feel very proud.
12. Anything in your running experience you regret?
It would have to be quitting the sport when I was 18. I had gotten myself a full time job working at the Dolphin Centre and I didn’t have time to train. Looking back now I really regret giving up on running as I had been told I could have been good enough to represent England, so it definitely is my biggest regret.
13. What’s your idea of running heaven?
A flat course on the road.
14. What’s your idea of running hell?
A race with lots of hills in!!!
15. What is the best piece of running advice you’ve ever been given?
I think it would be always believe in yourself, even when running becomes tough and also hard work pays off; such great advice.
16. Any advice to newcomers to running?
I would say always listen to what the coaches are telling you but also make sure you are enjoying what you are doing but don’t be afraid to ever ask for advice.
17. What keeps you going when the going gets tough in a hard race?
I think about happy times with my family but also if it’s a scenic race I like to concentrate on that also.
18. How do you relax/reward yourself after a race?
I like to have a nice hot bath and a few beers.
19. If you could run anywhere in the world, where would it be?
God this is a tough one. I would have to say I would love to run in New York but also along a beach in the Maldives.
