Having spent several weeks battling the hot weather, Quakers were faced with both rain and wind at the weekend.
Four headed over to the Lake District for this year’s Lakeland Ultras, which started and finished at Coniston. Emily Beaumont was the sole one to tackle the 100 mile event, coming home in 39 hours 18 minutes, while in the 50 mile event, Lucia Minto finished in 11 hours 38 minutes, along with Mark and Wendy Colling who went round together in 16 hours 54 minutes.
The latest club championship race, the James Herriot Country Trail Run, took place around Castle Bolton, which saw runners covering a very undulating 14K route. In some wet and windy conditions, Marc Ellis finished in seventh place overall in 1:00:59 (and second in his age category), followed by Rob Dent (1:05:53), Andrew Vernon (1:09:10), Phil Rutter (1:15:03), Rob Gilham (1:20:24), Sandra Cass (1:31:56), Julie Whinn (1:32:22), Gill Colling (1:33:22) and John Whinn (1:52:50).
Also having to contend with the unfavourable conditions were the quartet who travelled to the Northumberland Coastal Run, a 14 mile route from Beadnell to Alnmouth which started and finished on the beach. Michael Joyeux finished the race in fifth place overall in 1:26:54 along with Katherine Hackett (1:51:16), Dave Murphy (2:05:56) and Andrew Walker (2:21:16).
Susan Rigg was the sole Quaker at the Fell Em Doon Woodland 10K, finishing the trail route near Ashington in 1:08:02.
Midweek had seen the fifth race in the Darlington Trail Series 5K, this time along the old railway track near Middleton St George. Gareth Kyle finished in eighth place overall in 22:10 followed by Stuart Hardcastle (25:12), Paul Hutchinson (28:04), Nikki Thompson (29:02), Lisa Reeve (29:29) and Emily Beaumont (30:40).
Also taking place midweek was the second of the club’s summer handicap races, the White Horse run. 34 runners took part in the 7K distance around the River Skerne, with Rob Dent the first finisher over the one-lap route.
The previous week had seen Lindsey Lester head up to Monkton for the latest round of the North East Masters track meets, running the 100m in 15.0s, the 400m in 1:16.3 and landing 3.67m in the long jump.

At Sedgefield, Andrew Vernon finished in 22:55 along with Dave Thompson (23:57), Richard Payne (28:39), Rebecca Dodd (29:25), Gill Wallis (34:27), Sharon Carr (38:50) and Sarah Watson (38:51), while at Albert Park, Stephen Moore and Helen Whiting ran there in 26:41 and 39:04 respectively. At Gibside, Naomi Dixon finished in 39:45 with Gemma Marshall (39:46) and Olly Moore (39:47), Paul Dalton ran at Riverside in 18:43, Peter Rowley did the Catterick run in 26:25, Sarah Wilson finished at Redcar in 26:51, while David Ledgerwood completed the Cotsford Fields run near Peterlee in 26:16.
Further afield, John and Claire McGrath did the Colchester Castle run in 25:31 and 33:19 respectively, Jennifer Foster ran at Keswick in 37:34, Malcolm Hewitson did the Fritton Lake run near Great Yarmouth in 27:16, Stuart Hardcastle completed the Wepre run near Chester in 24:34, while down in London, Michael King did the Wormwood Scrubs run in 30:22.
